Abstract: |
Archaeological and architectural recording was undertaken prior to, and during works to replace the roof of the building and to demolish internal walls down to first-floor level. The study identified feature confirming the impression of a major reconstruction of c1500, with the building retaining only vestiges of the earlier (14th century?) fabric. The earlier medieval range may have had a full-height open hall. After the Dissolution, parts of the claustral buildings of Coverham became a house, with the west range probably passing into domestic use. During the late 18th or early 19th century, a number internal walls were inserted, at least partly in relation to non-domestic usage. A subsequent remodelling took place in the late 19th/early20th century. [AIP] |
