Abstract: |
Archaeological field evaluation was carried out at the proposed Southwick Country Park site in May 1995. Fifteen trenches were excavated in areas intended for planting and landscaping. Areas proposed for sports pitches, and designated open areas, were not examined. Trenching identified a possible prehistoric gully and an area of medieval (probably 13th-century) activity comprising an earthwork bank or platform sealing a well or soakaway and drainage and other ditches. A second area of medieval, probably also 13th-century, activity comprising linear features, including those identified as possible beam slots for timber buildings and fences, and a series of stakeholes was also revealed. The small sample size excavated made it difficult to define the extent of areas of archaeological significance, or to establish the scale, date and nature of the activities that the findings represented.
