Abstract: |
Work was undertaken to establish the extent of rabbit infestation within the site and then to 'recontour' superficial deposits overlying and masking the remains prior to their on-site interpretation within their probable monastic complex. The chapel is one of a complex of buildings. Two trenches were dug into the deposits overlying the chapel and these were found to be deep deposits of rabbit-burrowed sand below a turf layer. The rabbit burrowing did not appear to have caused significant archaeological damage. This main sand deposit was removed from below the turf to leave the chapel walls defined as earthworks. The origins of the sand deposit possibly comes from either windblown material or from the conversion of the walls into a machine-gun post during World War II. [Au(abr)] |
