Abstract: |
The study area was located at the junction of Bancroft and Fishponds Road. The site was currently a motorcycle showroom. The site lay to the north of the historic centre of Hitchin; just above the area identified as being of archaeological significance. A number of prehistoric finds had been recovered in the Hitchin area, however, these were located some distance from the site and as such it would seem unlikely that significant remains of this date would be encountered in the study area. Although Bancroft itself ran along the route of a possible Roman road the distribution of materials of this date would again suggest that it was unlikely that significant remains of this date would be encountered on site. The study area lay some distance from the focus of Saxon activity in the area, which recent excavations had shown to be in the Queen Street area. Given this, and the distribution of finds, it also seemed unlikely that significant remains of this date were present. The evidence from archaeological excavations at Russell's Tanner, close to the study area, identified traces of medieval domestic and industrial activity. This suggested that, although outside the centre of the medieval town, the Bancroft area was being utilised. As such it was possible that archaeological remains of this date may have been present within the study area. In the post-medieval period a structure stood on the site: either a barn or a row of cottages. Subsequent development on the site, however, was likely to have damaged or destroyed the archaeological remains on the site. It was noted that the possibility that, as yet unknown, archaeological remains may be present within the study area could not be discounted. [Au(abr)] |
