Abstract: |
An evaluation, comprising fieldwalking, test-pitting and the excavation of machine trenches, was undertaken to evaluate a proposed location for a Stonehenge Visitor Centre in an area straddling the extreme south end of King Barrow Ridge, immediately to the south of the present route of the A303. Concentrations of artefacts within the topsoil horizon were shown to be present on three fairly distinct areas. These were immediately south of the King Barrow Ridge barrow group, to the west and to the east end of the evaluation area. The group to the south of the King Barrow Ridge occurred in association with a concentration of archaeological features, including a square enclosure and a linear ditch, whilst the smaller concentration at the east end occured in association with an isolated Neolithic pit containing Grooved Ware. The western concentration did not appear to be associated with subsurface archaeological activity, although archaeological features were recorded in the vicinity. [Au(abr)] |
