Abstract: |
Nine 3m by 2m test pits were excavated within the footprint of the proposed hotel building as an evaluation required in response to a condition upon outline planning permission. This evaluation revealed an alluvial sequence of river silts and gravels overlain by a sandy clay which was overlain by a peat horizon. The peat was overlain by a clay deposit which was overlain by the modern make-up. This alluvial sequence was typical of the area and had been found on a number of recent archaeological evaluations in the area. The earliest part of the sequence comprised Thames Terrace Gravels which were thought to have been lain down in the Devensian under conditions of high energy. The finer sand and clay overlying the river gravels indicated that energy levels had dropped with the transportation of finer material rather than the heavier river gravels. This finer material may have been linked with the receding of the ice sheets which began c.10000 BP and the subsequent rises in sea level at the beginning of the Holocene. The peat sequence was similar to the peat sequence recorded to the east of the site at Thamesmead which suggested that this peat started to occur around the middle of the Holocene at 6150+-70BP (Neolithic) and continued to develop until about 2540+-BP (Bronze Age). Although no artefacts or ecofacts were found within the alluvial sequence the archaeological evaluation gave a greater understanding of the prehistoric environment within the Greenwich peninsula which could be compared with other localised environments to produce an overall picture of land and river regimes from prehistoric times to the present day.
