Abstract: |
An evaluation was undertaken as a planning condition prior to development. No archaeological deposits or features were recorded in any of the trenches. Modern disturbance associated with the former London Rubber Company premises was encountered in all trenches, but below them a series of fine alluvial clays and silty clays were recorded. These deposits filled and sealed a number of palaeochannels representing former watercourses associated with the rivers Lea and Ching. The drop in the level of the gravels recorded across the site suggested that a very large relict channel, probably representing an earlier course of the River Ching, ran east to west across the site.
