Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a residential development, which comprised a now ruinous walled kitchen garden, was undertaken. The site lay within the north-west corner of an area designated in the Register of Historic Battlefields as the site of the Battle of Stoke Field in 1487. The proposal site contained no features relating to the battle. Visible earthworks which probably represented the remains of a shrunken medieval village and which formed part of a SAM lay to the south-east of the site, and a medieval hospital was reputed to have lain c. 100m to the north-east, in the area of the present Stoke Hall. The hall was a Grade II Listed Building constructed principally in the early 19th century, but which incorporated an earlier structure. A general distribution of prehistoric and Roman artefacts and sites had been recorded in the surrounding area, although none had been found in the immediate vicinity of the proposal site. It was recommended that an evaluation should be undertaken. [Au(adp)] |
