Abstract: |
Desk-based study of a proposed development site identified that cropmarks representing medieval ridge and furrow lay within the site, and that a scatter of post-medieval artefacts had been recorded during construction of a gas pipeline across the area. Soils in the locality were prone to waterlogging, and would therefore not have been favoured for prehistoric settlement. In contrast to the assessment area, a gravel ridge to the north had revealed evidence of prehistoric activity. The site lay in the hinterland of the Roman town of Cambridge, and a possible Roman road known as the Madingley Road, which had been established as an important route by the medieval period, passed nearby. It was concluded that the discovery of activity at the site pre-dating the Iron Age was unlikely, but that early roadside activity remained a possibility despite the uncertain origins of the Madingley Road.
