Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of residential development and landscaping. The desk-based assessment found that the site lay close to the excavated remains of Neolithic, Bronze Age, Roman and Saxon domestic and funerary activity. There was considered to be a medium to high possibility that activity from one or more of these periods would have extended into the site. The extent, nature and condition of any surviving archaeological remains were not known. Of particular importance was the extent to which truncation associated with the 19th /20th century racecourse had removed the topsoil thus rendering the archaeological levels more susceptible to damage from landscaping activity. Field evaluation was recommended. [Au(abr)] |
