Abstract: |
Four trial trenches were excavated to investigate the potential for surviving evidence of buildings associated with the Abbey of St. Augustine, elements of which may have occupied the site until the 18th century. The trenches revealed wall footings that were likely to have related to a medieval range depicted on a view of the area by Bernard Lens in 1712. The medieval footings had been reused for the later 18th century buildings that occupied the site until the late 1930's; the present ground surface was likely to have been the approximate level of the cellar floors of these buildings. As a result evidence of medieval occupation within the structures had been lost, although a rough stone cobbled surface, revealed at the Canons Marsh end of the site, was likely to have been part of an open yard beyond the southern end of the range. Dating evidence from the make-up deposits for this yard surface suggested a 13th-14th century date. To the west of the structural remains, the trenches revealed garden soil deposits of 18th and 19th century date. [Au] |
