The remains of five medieval tiled pavements were recorded at the Cluniac priory of Thetford. These were situated within the church, the Lady Chapel and the Infirmary Chapel. Tracings of some of the tiles were taken in November 1996. On a return visit in February 1997, the tiles were found to have been covered with sand over gauze sheets, as winter protection. The tiles within the Infirmary Chapel had been covered directly with sand, which had caused a degree of deterioration in glaze survival and design clarity since the previous visit; the tiles had assumed a uniformly orange appearance. A representative sample of all of the recognisable tile designs was drawn, as the presence of sand rendered it impossible to undertake the more common practice of making 'rubbings' of tile surfaces.
