Abstract: |
A desktop study of the archaeological implications of proposed development at the former Brightlands School identifed that the site lay within the medieval town of Nenham and that the area may well have been occpied since the Saxon period. The proposal area lay about 60 metres west of the River Severn near the point where the river was crossed both by a ford and later a ferry. The study area also lay only 50 metres west of the site of the early medieval church of St Peter and its churchyard. Documentary evidence revealed that a rectory house existed in 1348, possibly within the proposal area. This was abandoned in favour of a site closer to the later church. [Au(adp)] |
