Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the laying of a new foul sewer rising main. Earlier desk-based assessment had identified that the surrounding area contained a small number of recorded archaeological sites, mainly comprising prehistoric findspots, but that none had been recorded on the pipeline route itself. However, it was considered likely that the pipeline would disturb deposits of palaeoenvironmental interest sealed by river alluvium, and possibly in situ artefactual material. The presence of both organic and inorganic deposits of palaeoenvironmental interest was confirmed during archaeological observation of geotechnical investigations. During the watching brief, which was hampered by poor ground conditions, sufficient observations were made to conclude that the excavations had not extended to the organic sequences identified earlier.
