Abstract: |
An archaeological excavation was undertaken in advance of improvements to the sewerage/drainage arrangements associated with the redevelopment as part of a condition attached to Scheduled Monument Consent (in the Hadrian's Wall corridor). The truncated remains of Hadrian's Wall were recorded. The Wall foundation was constructed with flat sandstone slabs and sub-angular blocks, bonded with clay. This foundation extended through both excavation trenches for c. 2.80m north-south. A single course of the southern face of the Wall was recorded in Trench 7, built directly upon the foundation stones. A burnt layer was found directly underneath the foundations indicating ground clearance before the Wall was constructed. [Au(adp)] |
