Abstract: |
Observations during the construction of a water mains were undertaken. Various features were identified, the majority of which remained undated. A pit and scoop were uncovered which contained charcoal and iron slag, indicative of a smithy, although no smithy was seen on the mid-19th century tithe map nor later maps. A possible post-medieval stone-lined culvert was also revealed. Various undated boundary ditches and hedgebanks were also observed and recorded. One large pottery sherd was found which was thought to have been of prehistoric (possibly Middle Bronze Age) date and possibly represented part of a funerary urn. This may have been significant in relation to several prehistoric enclosures which had been recorded in sites which lay in the vicinity of the development area. [AIP] |
