Abstract:
An excavation was carried out along the proposed line of a footpath around the north side of a late medieval arched gateway. A Hanging Chapel stood upon the gateway, and a stone structure had been added to its north side in the mid-19th century to house a fire engine. The gateway, chapel and engine house formed a Listed Building and Scheduled Ancient Monument. A low bank and scarp to the north were thought to mark the line of the late Saxon defences on the east side of the town. During the excavation, the base of a denuded clay bank which probably represented the Saxon defences was revealed. No clear evidence of a ditch was found to the east of the bank; the natural scarp seemed to have been cut back and steepened, thus providing clay for the bank. The medieval gateway had been built across the line of the bank, which had been dug away for this purpose. At least two periods of repair and underpinning of the gateway wall were apparent. A quarry pit dug into the east side of the scarp and a cess pit dug into the bank dated from the early 19th century. The latter was sealed beneath the floor of the fire engine house, which itself had removed yet more of the earlier bank. [Au(adp)]
