Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out during various works at a moated site which was a SAM. The works involved clearance of fallen stone from the moat, removal of post-1965 spoil and debris, the renovation of the drawbridge by the removal of stone and spoil, restoration of the spillway, construction of a spillway and emptying sluice on the site of the original monk wooden pipe, and the realignment of a drainage outfall. No significant archaeological material was found during the clearance of stone or the removal of debris from the moat, or during the realignment of the outfall. During restoration of the drawbridge, a crude stone-built trackway which blocked the moat was removed. This revealed the abutments of an original bridge at this location. The trackway had been constructed of ashlar sandstone blocks robbed from the original moat structure, enclosing a soil and rubble fill which contained pottery from kitchen wares of the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as fragments of clay pipes and some broken porcelain. This material was mixed with broken brick and tile from an 18th century building, and was thought to have been introduced from another site. The wooden remains of the original monk were found waterlogged and in good condition, and were left in situ. It was concluded that the works had not disturbed significant archaeological evidence concerning the building and occupation of the platform. However, it was recommended that consultation with engineers and building advisors from English Heritage should take place prior to a final phase of restoration of stonework and the spillway. [AIP]
