Abstract: |
Four trial holes were excavated in preparation for the opening of a 100m long evaluation trench. This trench was intended to search for evidence of a possible diversion of the vallum of Hadrian's Wall. A desktop assessment of the site had suggested that the earthwork may have turned away from the Wall line near Westgate Hill and run south-east to meet the riverbank in the area of Pottery Lane. Very large depths of overburden were discovered at each trial hole. The excavated material was mixed and largely appeared to be of modern date; in places it was loose and unconsolidated. After consultation with the County Archaeologist's office and the client, and following examination of borehole logs that had not been available earlier in the process, it was decided that the depth of overburden made trench evaluation impracticable. No finds were collected in the trial excavation process, and no archaeological features were recorded. It was recommended that a watching brief should be maintained during groundworks for foundations, services, and a proposed underground car park at the site. [Au(abr)] |
