Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken on the excavation of a number of test pits prior to the determination of a planning application for the site's development. The Taplow Gravels identified during these works represented the layer from which archaeological artefacts pertaining to the early prehistoric period were likely to be recovered. Clearly, later prehistoric activity could be expected to overly these gravels. In all test pits the gravels had been truncated horizontally by landscaping and construction dating to the late 19th/early 20th century. This had removed evidence for postglacial activity. However, it was possible that deep cut features from this period or later did occur across the site. With regards to pre-glacial Palaeological remains, no evidence was produced to support the presence/absence of such remains. This was not unexpected in such a small sample. Clearly a great deal more of the deposit would need to be exposed in order to increase the chances of recovering this material. [Au(adp)] |
