Abstract: |
An archaeologial desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to the proposed development of the site which would involve the demolition of the present buildings across the site and the construction of a new building. Significant archaeological remains from the Roman period had been recorded in the immediate vicinity, including 1st and 2nd century clay and timber buildings, later masonry buildings, road metallings and an amphitheatre, and might be expected on site. The site lay in the south-west corner of a rectangular insula which was enclosed by roads to the west, south and east. It was possible that late Saxon cut features may have survived including sunken-floored buildings, some of which had been found in the vicinity. Ground reduction for the existing basement slab would have removed all or most of any medieval and post-medieval horizontal stratigraphy, however, it was possible deep cutting features may have survived. The report recommended that further evaluation work be undertaken, possibly at the same time as future geotechnical investigations. [Au(adp)] |
