Abstract: |
As part of the installation of a new underground irrigation system for the golf course across the site it was proposed to lay pipework within the Scheduled Monument Area of Caesar's Camp, a transitional/Early Iron Age hillfort. The watching brief consequently formed the archaeological element within an application for Scheduled Monument Consent. Five trenches were opened in the centre, on the ramparts, in the ditch and on the causeway of Caesar's Camp. Some burnt flints and one struck flint, a small pit and a possible metalled surface over the western causeway were considered to date from the prehistoric occupation, and evidence for medieval/post-medieval ridge and furrow fields was also noted. A central path was also recorded. It was clear that the medieval/post-medieval ploughing had removed any in situ stratigraphy inside the fort, leaving just deep-cut features which cut into the natural gravel. [Au(adp)] |
