Abstract: |
The north churchyard was partly set on a slope; a staircase had been built in the mid-19th century, which had caused considerable disturbance. The topsoil and subsoil were of some depth here and contained 18th-19th century potsherds. There was little indication of possible grave cuts, probably because of previous disturbance and no human bones were recovered. Half way up the slope a distinct clay and stone band was showing in section and this had been cut on its lower side. It remains unclear whether his was a natural outcrop or a man-made feature, possibly defining a previous northern extent of the churchyard. The top of this band was not far below topsoil and because soil had built up over the centuries, through burial activity, it may have been exposed at one time and could have formed a boundary feature. This may have been a straight boundary perhaps set parallel to an earlier church on the site, before it had been rebuilt and the churchyard expanded into its present rounded plan. [Au(abr)] |
