Abstract: |
Geophysical surveys were undertaken over c.3ha of meadow and pasture in order to identify the nature and extent of likely archaeological features prior to the proposed maintenance of the site as meadow with some possible limited tree planting. A geomagnetic technique, fluxgate gradiometry, was used. The surveys detected two sets of ridge and furrow cultivation remains and a possible hollow-way, all of which were presumed to have been medieval in date. The possible remains of short sections of several other ditches were also detected. Service pipes and possible building debris were included in the interpretation plans. The ridge and furrow remains and possible hollow-way formed part of a more extensive medieval landscape at Lamesley. For this reason the landscape was considered as being of local and regional significance. However, no further archaeological work was recommended in this instance, since there was no development planned for the study area. [Au(adp)] |
