Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during geotechnical site investigations for a new drainage scheme. Three trial pits were observed on the Alstonefield Road, heading west from the village. Each exposed existing services cutting through the natural limestone; no deposits of archaeological interest were observed. Two boreholes were also monitored, one of which was situated within an area defined by a worked stone boundary, which was probably a remnant portion of a mill structure, of which only a converted barn had survived above ground. Both boreholes went through c. 3m of overburden before reaching bedrock. The resulting spoil contained fragments of brick. It was concluded that the depth of the deposits located by the boreholes indicated that there was a significant chance of finding deposits of archaeological importance during further works. It was recommended that an archaeological watching brief should be conducted during any further excavations in the vicinity.[AIP] |
