Abstract:
Archaeological monitoring carried out during the construction of housing uncovered evidence for the settlement of the site and early medieval defences of the town. Although the scale of the work was limited, there were sufficient finds to suggest occupation of the site during the Later Neolithic, Iron Age, Middle Saxon and Late Saxon/early medieval continuing through to post-medieval times. The remains of the early medieval town bank were examined and a robbing trench contained evidence for a medieval stone building, probably a bastion or gateway, close to the line of the footpath to the west of the site. The latest defensive feature was a polygonal earthwork, which probably dated from the mid 16th century. [Au]
