Abstract:
The watching brief was carried out during the excavation of footings for a new conservatory and digging of service trenches. The farmhouse lay immediately north of a SAM, the deserted hamlet of Littlecote. A chapel and a 'mansion', the latter said to have been demolished in 1804, formerly existed in the vicinity. There was also potential for below-ground medieval occupation. In the event, with one possible exception, the watching brief produced no features or finds certainly earlier than the 19th century. Of the few features exposed, most appeared to be related to the farmhouse itself which was thought to have originated as a stable or coach-house of 17th or 18th century date. The only feature recorded which might have been of slightly earlier date was a layer of cobbles tentatively interpreted as a made trackway. The existence of the routeway shown as an 'ancient private road' on an Inclosure map of 1814, of which this might have formed a part, was noted. This ancient road may have been incorporated as a garden feature during the later 17th century or 18th centuries when the kitchen garden was lain out. [Au(abr)]
