Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in order to meet the requirements of a planning condition on the construction of a large garage and storage type building. Frowsbury Hill, a tumulus and SAM, was situated c.5m to the south-east of the approved new building. The evaluation involved the opening of two trenches, and revealed evidence of prehistoric activity in the area in the form of six flints worked by human hand in the subsoil of trench 2. The proposed building plot was within woods near the top of the hill on which the tumulus stood. The hill sloped down to the north and west and the site lay on a level platform which had partly been formed naturally and modified by tipping demolition and other rubbish onto the northern end of it. Although the struck flints were not of great significance in themselves, the proximity of the adjacent SAM increased their archaeological value, and it was recommended that a watching brief be carried out during groundworks for any further finds or features.
