Abstract: |
A photographic record of the hospital buildings and a documentary study of the recent history and development of the hospital was undertaken in response to a proposal to demolish most of the buildings and redevelop the land for residential use. The report described the history of Stoke Park Hospital from 1909 until the present. It concentrated on the significance of the establishment within the history of the development of provision for mental handicap, and on the date, function, and significance of the extant buildings on the site. Accompanying this report was an appendix offering reproductions of aerial photographs, maps and illustrations of specific buildings, c1911 to c1991. No evidence was presented for the pre-1909 history of Stoke Park, its buildings and garden features, since these had been the subject of previous consultants reports. [Au(abr)] |
