Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in respect of a planning application for the construction of 12 houses, 4 flats and 2 bungalows with associated access. The evaluation revealed a sequence of alluvial deposits of marine origin, some of which probably related to the documented storm of the late 13th century. It was this storm which was the likely cause of the silting of the medieval harbour at New Romney and the end of its utility as a trading seaport. Within the sequence, evidence of human activity, spanning the 13th century, in the form of burnt patches, cut features and possible structural remains, were revealed, although only very limited excavation of these deposits was possible.
