Abstract: |
An archaeological assessment was undertaken on the route of the proposed bypass. Documentary and archaeological evidence was sparse. However, there was evidence of pre-Conquest settlement and it was possible that the line of a Roman road passed through the bypass corridor. Fieldwork indicated possible prehistoric occupation and an area which may relate to early industrial activity. Discrete areas of high magnetic susceptibility correlated with high artefact distributions. These areas were considered as having a relatively high archaeological potential. [Au(abr)] |
