Abstract: |
The excavations identified two principal periods of archaeological activity. Through isolated residual finds from earlier prehistoric periods were recovered, the first evidence of occupation was dated to the later Iron Age. The focus of this activity appeared to be to the north and west, and was represented by a chalk surface, large enclosure ditches, smaller field system ditches, and a probable palisade ditch. The pottery recovered from these features was mostly dated to the later Iron Age, consistent with regional traditions in this area of East Yorkshire. Large amounts of similar pottery types were recovered from within colluvial deposits, suggesting the existence of further Iron Age occupational activity within the area. A hiatus in archaeological activity was suggested at the end of the Iron Age by the separation of Iron Age and Romano-British features. [Au(abr)] |
