Abstract: |
A watching brief maintained during the excavation of a c. 60m long service trench revealed three significant archaeological features: i) a brick and timber culvert, ii) a timber revetment and iii) a narrow ditch. The culvert was probably associated with the establishment of the existing farm access track and perhaps dated to the 18th century. The revetment was perhaps earlier, and indicated the original extent of the existing pond which had been partially infilled when the farm track was built. The ditch produced significant quantities of very sooty unabraded pottery sheds of mid-14th to mid-15th century date, together with bone, and was almost certainly associated with nearby domestic settlement.
