Abstract: |
Archaeological observation adjacent to the scheduled area of St Mary's Priory revealed no evidence of the priory or precinct boundary. One sherd of medieval pottery was recovered. It was likely that the area of investigation was located immediately outside of the precinct boundary wall. A small area of rubble to the north of the site may have belonged to an agricultural building shown on the 1889 OS map. Several dumps of soil and domestic rubbish containing 19th and 20th century pottery were recorded and these were most probably from properties fronting onto Duke Street. [Au(abr)] |
