Abstract: |
The watching brief of foundation trenches to the rear of the site uncovered a dark brown/black sandy silt deposit filled with large river worn cobbles overlying a greyish yellow sandy silt layer. Both of the deposits were very similar to components of the fort ramparts noted in earlier excavations. While no direct conclusions could be drawn, it was possible that the deposits may have signified Roman layers. The results from the watching brief aided in the interpretation of Roman Ilkley. [Au] |
