Abstract: |
<summary>Excavations in advance of proposed remedial works to a stone retaining-wall within the precincts of Malmesbury Abbey confirmed the presence of an extension to the north range immediately to the west of the Abbey House. This newly-discovered building included an undercroft, but further evidence of its form was not forthcoming from the small area excavated. The immediate post-Dissolution history of the range was also unclear, although a final phase of demolition appeared to have taken place in the mid to late 18th century. Pictorial evidence demonstrated that the retaining-wall and associated landscaping of the site to produce the present topography could not have taken place until at least the final decade of the 18th century. {italon}?Au{italoff} |
