Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a residential development identified that no evidence of prehistoric activity had been recorded in the immediate surrounding area, although it was noted that the general vicinity of the site would have been attractive for prehsitoric activity due to the proximity of estuarine and coastal hunting resources. Roman coins had been found in the parish of Longton, which had itself first been recorded in the 12th century AD. The area around Longton had been subject to the advances of the Industrial Revolution during the 18th and 19th centuries, although the village itself had remained a centre for rural trades such as drying barley in malt kilns, two of which had been recorded on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map but had since been demolished. Structures had been present on the proposal site since at least the late 18th century. Four post-medieval boundaries, illustrated on 19th century maps of the site, were no longer visible, but had probably been created during piecemeal enclosure which had demarcated crofts and tofts, reflecting medieval ownership and tenancy divisions of open fields. It was concluded that the site had a low potential to add to the existing information on the development of settlement at Longton, although the former post-medieval boundaries may have survived as sub-surface features, and a raised area of land to the centre and rear of the site may have reflected build-up caused by occupation since the medieval period.
