Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of the typology, distribution and survival of water meadows within Hampshire was undertaken. The assessment identified a total of 317 separate blocks of water meadow in Hampshire, classified into four types based on morphological form. Air photographs from 1996/7 were examined to determine the present condition of the meadows and to ascertain the extent of their deterioration. Of those identified 4% were considered to be very well-preserved, 14% were considered to be fairly well preserved with slightly less than half of Hampshire's water meadows considered to be well preserved. The remainder were either totally destroyed, untraceable or survived only as cropmarks. Their condition was also examined from the 1970-1 County series of aerial photographs in order to gauge the extent to which the condition of the meadows had deteriorated between 1970 and 1996. The results suggested that during this period over one-third of the total number of water meadows had deteriorated and nine had been completely lost in the years between 1970 and 1996. [Au(adp)] |
