Abstract: |
Geophysical, topographic, and photographic survey followed by archaeological excavation were undertaken at the site in advance of the construction of the M1-A1 Link Road, east of Leeds with the aim of carrying out preservation by record of part of the Scheduled Ancient Monument known as Becca Banks. To the north of the monument a system of interrupted ditches, one of which predated the monument, was identified and excavated. Artefacts were recovered from stratified deposits within the monument, and a programme of soil sampling produced material suitable for radiometric dating. In addition, potential information was obtained about the local environment at the time of the construction of the monument, c. 6th-7th century AD. [Au] |
