Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a residential development, which was to involve both new construction and the conversion of an existing malthouse, one of the best to have survived in Saffron Walden. The town had originated in the mid to late Saxon period, and had become a prosperous market centre by the 11th century. The proposal area lay to the west of the medieval High Street, within the area enclosed by the outer bailey ditch of the castle. Excavations to the south had revealed the foundations of a late medieval building and an 18th or 19th century building. During the evaluation, post-medieval levelling layers of up to 2.6m in depth were revealed and a brick wall footing was found. This may have represented part of a building or a boundary wall. [AIP] |
