Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of foundations and service trenches for a bungalow. Earlier watching briefs undertaken at two sites in the vicinity had identified phases of medieval occupation. On both sites, a series of linear ditches interpreted as property boundaries had been exposed, and a quantity of pits and inter-cutting gullies suggesting dense settlement had been observed. Cropmarks and earthworks had been recorded to the south of the proposal site, and ridge and furrow lay to the north, south and west. Two moated sites lay nearby, one at a distance of 50m and one c. 500m to the north. During the watching brief, a ditch containing pottery dating from between the mid/late 16th and the 17th centuries was recorded, and a pit or ditch terminal containing a sherd of 12th-14th century pottery was revealed. A post-medieval gully was also found. The ditch was assumed to have been a property and/or field boundary, which may have related to a drainage ditch which had extended along the edge of Halton Road, and which had only recently been backfilled.
