Abstract: |
A watching brief was maintained during manual excavation of three trial pits and a trench for the insertion of new service ducts. The yard overlay part of the former moat around the Tudor palace. Deposits forming the upper levels of moat infill were seen towards the bottom of the excavations, they dated to the 18th century. Subsequent development of the site in the late 18th or 19th century was represented by drains and other services and the foundations of the existing buildings such as the Tapestry Store. A very small group of pottery and ceramic building materials provided limited but useful dating evidence for the moat contexts. [Au(abr)] |
