Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed redevelopment site identified that Roman remains had been recorded within the site. In 1883 and 1884, a hypocaust and a tessellated pavement had been found. Further features observed in 1961 included two arms of a stream, a culvert of Roman bricks, part of a Roman building and a pottery kiln. A metalled surface was thought to have been part of the main east-west Roman road under Newgate Street. In the surrounding area, a Bronze Age urn, 'native type' huts of an early Roman date and further evidence of Roman activity had been recorded. A medieval church had lain beneath or adjacent to the development site, and a medieval or later well had been observed at the site itself. It was noted that the 1961 redevelopment could have destroyed almost all of the archaeological deposits present; only limited areas of survival were anticipated. It was recommended that test-pits should be excavated in parts of the site where groundworks could potentially remove large areas of deposits. [AIP] |
