Abstract: |
A watching brief was undertaken during the excavation of geotechnical test-pits and boreholes. 2m of modern deposits were recorded over the outer moat of a double moated medieval castle, which had lain in Banbury town centre prior to its demolition in the mid-17th century. The observations concurred with antiquarian evidence that the moat had been extant until the early 19th century. Evidence was found to suggest that the northern and western sides of the moat may not have precisely followed their proposed lines. A dense concentration of ironstone blocks, characteristic of the type of building material used in Banbury from the medieval period until the 18th century, was observed within one test pit. A small number of the stones were dressed, although the majority were irregular. They may have represented rubble from the core of the castle wall, cast aside during the removal of stone for the repair of properties following the Civil War. [AIP] |
