Abstract: |
A watching brief was held over geotechnical trial pit excavation in three proposed development areas within the Old Palace School grounds identified no features or deposits of medieval or earlier date. Late medieval and post-medieval finds were recovered. Trial pit sections showed that the stratigraphic sequence was characterised by post-medieval activity in all three areas. However, the extent of the truncation was not known and in all the areas there existed the potential for archaeological cut features in the river terrace gravels at their interface with the overlying deposits.
