Abstract: |
Archaeological monitoring of a series of seven test pits and a trial trench dug during ground investigations adjacent to the Skerne Valley railway bridge in Darlington was carried out. It was designed to establish the palaeoenvironmental potential of the site. The environmental analysis indicated waterlogged conditions at the site. The presence of a floral assemblage that could have been derived from storm debris suggested a rapid flow in the part of the old river channel being investigated. This was in contrast to the still water and marshy conditions which enabled peat growth further upstream. [Au(adp)] |
