Abstract: |
Two in situ medieval tile pavements were recorded within the church at Denny Abbey. The first area of tiles probably represented the remains of a 14th century floor brought from Waterbeach by nuns and re-set at Denny. The tiles were in a generally worn condition, but some had retained traces of yellowish-brown and black glazes set in an alternating pattern and, occasionally, of decoration. The second area comprised an original floor which had once covered the entire refectory, and which remained largely complete, despite surface damage and areas of disturbance from later building works. The surviving floor rmeasured c. 26.00m by 6.80m, and consisted of approximately 5000 worn, monochrome tiles, some of which retained traces of dark green and yellow glazes.Only two showed evidence of decoration.
