Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during groundworks within a car park, which lay over the postulated line of the inner defensive earthworks of medieval Devizes. A cellar and two irregular voids were recorded. The voids were interpreted as partially backfilled 19th century wells, whilst the cellar was probably a chance survival relating to 18th and 19th century buildings. Extensive brick rubble derived from these was present. It was concluded that although no direct evidence of archaeological survival had been found, the lack of mass disturbance to underlying levels indicated a possibility that archaeological deposits could be present.
