Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based survey was undertaken to gather sufficient information to identify and establish the extent, nature, character, condition, quality and probable date of any archaeological and historic features within the survey area. The study area lay to the north-east of the Woodthorpe Estate and covered six hectares formed by a narrow, steeply wooded valley with the Car Brook running through the centre. Land use was a mixture of heath, grassland, willow carr and broad-leaved woodland. An examination of the available cartographic evidence suggested that the majority of the survey area was part of 'Spring Wood' which ran along the valley of the Car Brook. This wood was in place by at least 1835, and may have been mentioned in a document of 1657. It was physically separate from the medieval Bowden Housteads Wood which lay just to the north; the north side of the survey area represented the southern boundary of this latter wood. The detached southern portion of the study area, to the south of Spinkhill Avenue, still retained the outline of what might have been an internal compartment of Spring Wood. Only four archaeological sites were recorded within the survey area, with a further eight sites lying within a 500m wide buffer zone. Part of the medieval and later boundary of Sheffield park would have passed through the survey area, on the west side of the Car Brook, and it was possible that a small, circular, detached area of woodland shown on the historic maps on the south side of Bowden Housteads Wood contained an archaeological site. The other two identified sites within the survey area were relatively modern features. [Au(abr)]
