Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation, consisting of the excavation of seven trial trenches, was undertaken across the site prior to the proposed comercial development of the site. These revealed areas of made ground which were most likely to have been associated with development across the site since the 19th century. A backfill revealed across the site was clearly indicative of some major truncation of natural deposits, possibly the East Pond which was dug in about 1802, though the trenches had ben positioned to avoid this feature. The report concluded that the evaluation did not produce any deposits, features or material of archaeological importance and that it was unlikely that any damage would accrue to potentially significant archaeological deposits through construction plans.
